Canada: Framework nation of Multinational Battle Group Latvia
The friendly relations between Latvia and Canada are based on cooperation in the Euro-Atlantic area. Latvia and Canada share a desire to strengthen democracy and develop economic and social cooperation worldwide. Canada was the first country to ratify Latvia's accession to NATO in 2004.
Since 2017, the NATO Multinational Battle Group, led by Canada, has been deployed in Latvia. With Canada taking the lead of the Battle Group, bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Canada in the field of defence and cyber security has also grown significantly.
Canada continues to be supportive, providing opportunities for NAF personnel to develop their military capabilities, and investing resources to develop Latvia's military infrastructure - benefiting not only the Canadian contingent, but also the other multinational Battle Group nations and NAF.
