On Wednesday, 28 August, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Atis Švinka and Ambassador of Canada to Latvia Brian Szwarc will participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia infrastructure organised by the Task Force Latvia at the Military Base "Ādaži".

Further to the establishment of the NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia, Canadian-funded Armoured Vehicle storage and maintenance facilities will be opened at the Military Base "Ādaži". They will be used to house the Brigade’s tanks and other armoured vehicles, as well as provide sheltered areas for their required maintenance.

The ceremony will also mark the completion of projects funded by Canada and Spain, which has improved the infrastructure of each country’s respective compounds within the military base “Ādaži” by adding a new warehouse, tent facilities, security perimeter and a concrete road.

The investments of Canada and Spain in construction of these facilities amount to more than €7 million. Latvia provided construction supervision to ensure the success of the projects. Both construction projects started in 2023 and were completed in about a year.

Investments in the development of the Military Base "Ādaži” demonstrate Canadian, Spanish and NATO’s long-term commitment to Euro-Atlantic security. This infrastructure will allow Allies who contribute to the Canadian led Multinational Brigade the opportunity to bring more equipment and personnel into Latvia as the Brigade develops its combat capability.

As reported earlier, in July this year, a ceremony was held to highlight the launch of the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Latvia Battle Group to brigade level and the establishment of the new NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia, which will be comprised of more than 3,500 troops.

In November 2024, the Brigade will conduct its first large - scale field training exercise and demonstrate its integration into the NATO higher command structure.

The brigade is expected to reach full combat readiness by 2026.

NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia has Canada as a Framework nation, along with forces of contributing nations: Albania, Czech Republic, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. Sweden is also expected to join the new NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia.

The ribbon - cutting ceremony of the NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia infrastructure at the Military Base "Ādaži" will also be attended by representatives of the National Armed Forces, NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia, NATO Multinational Division Headquarters "North" and the State Defence Military Facilities and Procurement Centre.
