Ramstein group announces new weapons shipments to Ukraine

On Friday, 20 January, Defence Minister Ināra Mūrniece attended the 8th Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting in Ramstein, Germany. During the meeting, defence ministers reaffirmed their support to Ukraine and agreed to ship more weapons to reinforce Ukraine’s military capabilities required to take back its territories.

‘To fend off the unprovoked Russian invasion, Ukraine will not only need moral support. They will need much more. More heavy arms, air defence, artillery systems, drones and other military resources,’ Minister Mūrniece .

Defence Minister also informed her colleagues about the plan to send additional military resources from Latvia. Latvia will send 10 units of Stinger air defence systems, two Mi-17 helicopters, tens of chain guns with ammunition, tens of unmanned aerial vehicles and spare parts for howitzers. Ukraine will receive them soon. In addition to that, Latvia is also planning to train 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers of different ranks this year, doubling the number of trainees compared to 2022.

In addition to agreement to supply more weapons to Ukraine reached by the whole Ramstein group, Minister Mūrniece and seven other defence ministers also agreed on joint commitment to provide additional support to Ukraine. This document identifies specific military resources to be supplied by these countries to Ukraine. Military aid will be delivered swiftly and in large shipments to ensure that Ukraine can successfully regain control over its territories.

Ukraine Defence Contact Group, which meets in Ramstein, brings together more than 50 world’s countries. Its purpose is to collectively support Ukraine, in particular support Ukrainian Armed Forces that are currently fighting against Russian aggression and full-scale invasion of the country.
