Joint Expeditionary Force Member States meeting concludes in Mālpils

Today, 11 October, a meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) Permanent Secretaries was held in Mālpils to discuss regional security issues and the strengthening of mutual cooperation.

Officials discussed Russia's unjustified war in Ukraine and other current European security challenges, as well as opportunities to strengthen cooperation between the JEF Member States military industries.

As reported, on 3 October, in response to the targeted sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, the JEF Defence Ministers convened at an online meeting and decided to increased maritime presence, Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance activities in the Baltic Sea.

The JEF is a cooperative format established on 30 November 2015 by the UK, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Norway. In 2017, Finland and Sweden joined the initiative, while Iceland joined in April 2021.

Latvia's main benefits from participating in the JEF initiative include deepening cooperation with the UK and other Member States, development the overall capabilities of the armed forces through regular participation in international military exercises, as well as development of practical partnerships and new combat capabilities.
