Ināra Mūrniece to attend NATO Vilnius Summit
From 11 to 12 July, the Minister of Defence Ināra Mūrniece, as part of the Latvian delegation led by the Prime Minister Krišjānis Karinis, will participate in the NATO Summit in Vilnius, where the leaders of the member states will discuss and adopt key decisions to strengthen the Alliance's defence capabilities.
On Tuesday, 11 July, Mūrniece will participate in an informal meeting of NATO Defence Ministers, as well as in a press conference of the three Baltic Defence Ministers, during which a declaration on promoting access to Baltic airspace for NATO deterrence and training will be signed.
On Wednesday, 12 July, the Minister of Defence will attend the NATO High-level Women's Breakfast. In addition, the Defence Minister will hold bilateral meetings with the Polish and Finnish Defence Ministers during the Vilnius Summit on Wednesday.
Strengthening deterrence and defence capabilities will be high on the agenda of the NATO Summit in Vilnius. Member States will discuss increasing the Alliance's defence spending, with the need to raise the threshold for NATO countries' minimum national defence spending as a share of gross domestic product.
At the same time, strengthening NATO's long-term political relationship with Ukraine, as well as strengthening NATO's practical support to Ukraine, is one of the priorities of the Vilnius Summit. At the Summit, Heads of State and Government will discuss Ukraine's path towards NATO membership and agree on long-term financial support to Ukraine, providing practical assistance to the Ukrainian Armed Forces and contributing to Ukraine's defence planning process.
The Vilnius Summit will also discuss further steps to facilitate Sweden's early accession to NATO in order to enhance the deterrence and defence capabilities of the region and the Alliance as a whole.
The NATO Summit in Vilnius will be attended by the Heads of State and Government of the Alliance and chaired by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
