NATO countering terrorism

Terrorism in all its forms poses a direct threat to the security of the citizens of NATO countries, and to international stability and prosperity. It is a persistent global threat that knows no border, nationality or religion and is a challenge that the international community must tackle together. NATO’s work on counter-terrorism focuses on improving awareness of the threat, developing capabilities to prepare and respond, and enhancing engagement with partner countries and other international actors.

NATO's role in the international Community's fight against terrorism is determined by the Comprehensive Action Plan. A terrorism intelligence unit has been set up at NATO headquarters. NATO also advises and assists Iraqi security forces and institutions through the NATO mission in Iraq, as well as being part of the global Coalition in defeating Islamic State.

NATO's work on counter-terrorism is also taking place through the development of technology and the development of NATO capabilities in this area with the aim of protecting military units, civilians and infrastructure from terrorist attacks.

The Alliance's Strategic Concept recognizes terrorism in all its forms and manifestations as the most direct asymmetric threat to the security, international peace and prosperity of NATO citizens.
